My Website Design services begin with a consultation with the business owner or marketing director/manager. A website should be a business tool, designed to generate more enquiries and sales, but the way that is approached varies.

I will usually undertake preliminary keyword research prior to the meeting to find out the exact related search terms that people type in to Google and the number of searches per month. I’ll also undertake preliminary keyword competition analysis, to estimate how difficult it will to compete with the established websites on the first page of Google.

The same analysis will be applied to local (town/city/county) search terms.

The first question that needs to be answered is this; Is the website intended to be used as a tool to market to local people or nationally or globally?

Local Marketing

For example a Florist in Barrow-in-Furness will want to market primarily to local people. A website then would be best used as a way to highlight the services that they offer and provide a means of contact. The benefit to the Florist is that they can reduce the costs of offline advertising by taking smaller ads and pointing people to their website for more information.

In addition, the website needs to rank on the first page of Google for local search terms like “florists in Barrow”, “Barrow florists”, “wedding flowers Barrow” etc. A county can also be added to the keywords, so for example, ranking well for “florists in Cumbria” would be useful.

One mistake that’s often made with this type of site (often referred to as a brochure website) is the tendency to try and pack in too much information. A useful exercise then is to determine the most profitable activities of the business and feature them with a “strong call to action”.

They could if they wished, target the UK market if they were able to provide a national service. Plenty of Florists do just this offering flowers delivered anywhere in the UK within 24 hours.

National Marketing

If your business provides products or services that could be marketed throughout the uk, the approach to the build is slightly different.

You now need to rank on the first page of Google for search terms that have a reasonable volume of traffic, but now without a town or county name appended to them. So instead of ranking for “wedding flowers Barrow” or “wedding flowers Cumbria, you now need to rank for “wedding flowers”.

It should be obvious that this is a much harder ask as your website is now competing against all the other florist websites in the UK, not just locally. Some of these sites have been online for many years and have had a lot of development time and money spent on them already.

So, without taking out a second mortgage, how can you compete?

The answer lies in finding secondary, or “long term key phrases” to target and get ranked highly for on Google. You can get an estimate of the number of searches for any term (and related terms) by using the tool that Google themselves supply at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
